Unacceptable

Three wins in 19 games.

One win in 9 home games.

Seventy-one goals against in 19 games.

Eleven points, compared to the New York Islanders' 23.

It's all bloody unacceptable.

Fuck it. Fuck all of it.

I hate this team.

Amen to that.

Also: Fuck Don Cherry. This team is not worthy of our support, not by a long shot.

I just don't care anymore. I'm completely numb to it at this point. I can't get excited about hockey anymore. Whenever I check the scores I get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I hate this fucking team.

It's beyond sad. So much for establishing a "winning culture". This is gonna take more then just a few games to fix.

We should get together and comiserate.

Of course...the year we were supposed to be improved; the year we were supposed to have one the steadiest defences in the Eastern conference; the year we don't have our first rounder...is the year we completely shit the bed. Fuck you, hockey gods.

Sorry, but didn't we all know this was coming? Burke has been on the job for less than a year, and I thought it was well established that it would take at least two or three years to take the crap he had and turn it into a contender. We knew it was going to get worse before it got better, though maybe we didn't realize how much worse it would get.

Of course, none of that makes watching this team any easier, that's for damn sure.

They're not THIS bad IMO, but I said at the start of the season Schenn regressing a bit was expected, not because he's not a good young player bit because rarely if ever does a player his age repeat what he did in his rookie year.

Komisarek has always been brutal minus 07-08, ask Habs fan. Beauchemin is a meh.

Still this team is not cellar-terriroty, there have been quite a few games where they have outplayed their opponents and lost so it will probable even-out.

For the love of god though, get Toskala out of the net.

Thay anit that bad, oh yeah they are, look at the team....from the begining i said the offence was gonna be bad, NOONE listened to me saying, oh they were 10th in the leauge last year in goals, ya....but, scoring goals after the game has been decided dont really count in my opinion.....thank you for Kessel, but is it worth Taylor Hall, and a 1st and 2nd pick a year after, IMO, we suck, trading those picks makes us worse in 2 years....for the the leafs there is no where to go....nither up nor down...

That is a sad situation, FUCK THE CAP...

when will the hurting stop.

To Graeme:

Yes, it was supposed to get worse, but being worse is OK so long as you have something to look forward to at the end of the year. Now that there's no first rounder, it makes each loss all the more painful.

The Leafs
Are now forced to build through Free Agency due to np top draft picks for 2 years and no tradeable assets that will bring back anything of value. that's something that's very hard to do with a hard salary cap, and young players who get locked up long term long before they hit free agency.

Have fun with that Burkey.

@ LFIV: We're on the same page. I'm not upset anymore when I can't watch the game, for whatever reason. Because other than watching Kessel snipe, I'm not missing much. And watching Kessel is almost bittersweet, because it's apparent what getting him is going to cost us.

@ GB: That "winning culture" is hard to come by when you only win three out of 19. Unreal. And I'm all for commiseration, as long as it includes booze and recreational drugs.

@ Hungry Leafs Fan: Perhaps the hockey Gods are punishing us for always trading first-rounders. Until we learn our lesson, and rebuild the way it's supposed to be done, we will continue to be shat upon.

@ Graeme: I certainly didn't think this was coming. Three wins in 19 games. You saw that coming? I read your post, and I understand your point, but the whole needing to lose for a few years only works when you hold on to those precious draft picks. Burke's done it backwards. He's put all of his eggs into one basket, being Kessel's. Toskala's a write-off. What if Gustavsson doesn't work out? Then what? We could have used one of those picks to draft another goalie, that's for sure. When the Leafs were successful in the late 90s and early 2000s, it was because they could plug so many holes through free agency. We can't do that anymore. We tried this past off-season, and it certainly hasn't worked. It's hard to be optimistic about much of anything right now.

@ Moneypuck: I agree, they're not THIS bad, but when do they start to finish, and actually win? Once again the Leafs outshot their opponent last night. It's maddening. And re: Toskala, I'm 100% with you. He shouldn't be playing. The Leafs have as much confidence in him as Toskala has wins: ZERO.

@ Bhatti: Bro, who gives a fuck about the offence when the GAA is, what, 3.72? Yeah, they're not scoring, but it doesn't matter b/c even if they were averaging 3 goals a game, they're still losing. They don't know how to play defence, they can't kill penalties, and, for the most part, they don't have a goalie who can make saves. It's a shit-show back there. "When will the hurting stop"? Likely never. Now come and give me a hug.

@ Kevin: You illustrate my point about Kessel perfectly. But each loss is all the more painful, knowing what might have been waiting for us at the end of a season just like this one. A lottery pick. Perhaps the first-overall pick. Fuck.

I think the rock bottom that everyone has hit/is hitting, I hit last year. I stopped watching full games for a long time, snagged a period here and there, checked scores and highlights the next day. I couldn't deal with this terrible team after the Sundin fiasco.

The good news is, my interest rebounded just in time for this new crop of dickheads to disappoint me every other night. I'm so glad I'm living and dying by the team again. Haha.

OK, I managed to forget (or possibly block from my mind) that the Leafs didn't just give up a first rounder for Kessel, they gave up a first and second rounder this year and a first the year after that. The thing about losing for years is that it gives you high draft choices - which Boston will surely enjoy. OK, now I'm depressed.

But when Kessel scores 135 goals next year, everything will be OK. You'll see.

LeafFanInVan said...

@eyebleaf Yeah I agree about not worrying about missing games anymore. I picked a bad year to finally subscribe to gamecenter online :(

At least I can watch actual good teams (and they're not blacked out as much as the leafs on it either).

Currently my main hockey fun is rooting against the Canucks because if they have a successful season I don't know if I could take it.. So far it's not looking good!

Probably all a matter of sample size eyeb, if you head to behindthenethockey.com, Gab Desjardins outlines why the Leafs will probably turn it around for that reason.

Navin Vaswani (@eyebleaf) said...

@ Graeme: Because I want to depress you even more, here's my man MF37 from Bitter Leaf Fan (check the blogroll): The Leafs have managed to keep their first round pick just three times this decade. Tlusty, Schenn and Kadri are all the Leafs have to show for first rounders since 2000. (Boyes went for Nolan; Cola and Steen for Stempniak; 2003 and '04 dealt for 15 regular and 13 playoff games of Brian Leetch; Rask for Raycroft; the '07 first rounder went for Toskala). The Leafs won't get another first round pick into their system until 2012.

How you like them apples? We are completely fucked. But I'm with you, it's going to be totally bitching when Kessel breaks Wayne Gretzky's record for goals in a season.

@ LFIV: I picked up Centre Ice this season too. I don't think I've ever been more happy to watch non-Leafs hockey. It's a lot more fun, and I'm not so bloody emotionally invested. I can just enjoy it, without being made utterly sick by the product I support. Good times.

@ BhattiBoy: Don't even front, you loved that shit. Just a little.

@ Moneypuck: I read that post from Gabe. He does great work over at Behind The Net. I'm just shocked the Leafs have gone 20 games with such incredible bad luck. They've lost eight one-goal games. They're like the Blue Jays of hockey. Fitting.

LOL ... I really wish you'd stop beating around the bush.

As a Leaf fan all I can say is I'm not sure what Burke's plan for the rebuild is ... I understand tearing it down, but don't see how he'll build it up. Time will tell I suppose.

For now at least they appear to be playing hard ... we didn't even have that last year.
