Trip For Tavares

Well, the boys and I are off tonight to the great Canadian city of Brampton, Ontario, to take in some OHL hockey action.

It's the London Knights vs the Brampton Battalion. Word on the streets is that some dude named John Tavares plays for the Knights and, apparently, he's the shit.

So, we're going to see if all the hype around this guy is to be believed. We shelled out big bucks, $5 a ticket, so this Tavares fellow better not disappoint.

I like to think of the trip as a scouting mission. If the Hockey Gods choose to shine their light on the Toronto Maple Leafs (they never do), Tavares could be a Toronto Maple Leaf in June (it's not happening).

Anyway, by "scouting mission," I of course mean that I'll be wearing my Leafs jersey, getting hammered on what I assume is cheap, junior hockey priced beer, and chanting "Go Leafs Go!" repeatedly.

It should be a most pleasant evening. Rest assured I'll let you know how it goes.

If you've got a message you'd like me to pass along to our boy, JT, drop 'em in the comments. I'll be sure to oblige.

wooooo junior hockey. It is a delightful comedy of errors. You will come back appreciating the NHL...even the Leafs. Please remember that everyone is not a Tavares, so you will be seeing some pretty hilarious things on that ice. Even these non-Tavares boys deserve your love and cooing.

OHL games are the sh*t!!

I miss going to guelph storm games. Cheap tickets, beer, guys running each other on the ice and not being forced to sit beside a dude in a suit is what hockey is all about.

OHL was my intro to the game; used to live and die by the Windsor Spitfires' performance (more "die" than "live", but that's another story).

eyebleaf: Pay particular attention to Tavares' skating. Everything I have read about Tavares suggests that his hands are gold but that his skating needs work. Let us know what you think - is he far behind others on the ice?

I guess my question is, is it possible that JT's skating is bad enough to make him a risky prospect?

If I was the GM with the #1 lottery pick, that would make my blood run cold with Hedman (and others) also available in what is, by all accounts, a deep draft year. You would hate to be that guy, the guy with the #1 pick who passed over the consensus top pick, but on the other hand Brian Lawton was a consensus can't miss number one too; I seem to remember that there were some guys named Yzerman, Neely and Lafontaine who ended up achieving an awful lot more for their club.

There have been other consensus top picks that ended up as big busts: I seem to recall Dale McCourt being hyped pretty heavily and he never amounted to much. I think he was drafted the same year as Mike Bossy.

Anyway, I look forward to your thoughts.
