Fly away ...

Wow, B.J. Ryan really is finished. Released, unconditionally, with a cheque for $15 million.

So long, Beej. Your fist pumps won't soon be forgotten.

OK, they might be. In all honesty, there isn't much time to reflect. The money budgeted towards Ryan in 2010 will go towards Roy Halladay, right? Right?!?!

Crazy times.

UPDATE: Listening to Prime Time Sports on TheFan right now, Jeff Blair's hosting, and following reactions on Twitter. J.P. Ricciardi is being roasted on the radio (by calllers), and online. Nope, none of this - the Doc trade talks, the releasing of B.J. Ryan - has anything to do with Rogers tightening the purse strings.

The haters just don't get it. They simply continue to hate.

JP's plan is to release everyone, and pay Roy all the money left and play alone. A one man team.

I don't know about you, Joanna, but I'm cool with that.

So much for the Beej being on your banner.

Hasn't Roy Halladay been a one man team for most of his career?

He most certainly has, MadMurphy.

Does this move scream FIRESALE to you people? It doesn't to me. It screams SMART BASEBALL DECISION, B.J. RYAN IS FINISHED.

Sure, $15 million is a lot of money, a fucking lot of money, to pay someone to beat it, but, still, I don't see this as a firesale.

Jeff Blair is on The Fan right now, and he's saying exactly what I said in my earlier post: there was an assumption that the Jays were going to spend money when Ryan and Burnett, and Wells, Rios, and Hill were all acquired and/or re-signed.

Now, all bets are off, and no one knows what direction this team is headed in.

All we do know is that B.J. Ryan kind of sucks, and is no longer a Blue Jay, and I can't think of anyone who's not kind of pleased that's the case.

Goodbye Beej

And no, it does not seem like a firesale to me.

I'll miss B.J. Ryan, circa 2006. For that one year, he was fucking MONEY.

The problem with releasing everyone (BJ included) is that they get paid anyways. So Ryan's pay goes to Ryan, not Halladay or anyone else. J.P. continues to piss away money, and then turns around and complains about not having enough money. Huh? I don't get it

Matthias, I know Ryan is walking out of Toronto with $15 million. But his $10 million was on the budget for next year, and I'm sure it will remain there, able to be spent as J.P. sees fit.

It's basically an infusion of $10 million. Nobody was trading for him, if you believe that there was, I think you're solely mistaken. So we knew we'd pay him for the rest of the season. Now, Ricciardi and Beeston went to Rogers and asked for an extra $10 million, and it was granted, or they have a war chest, which they can reach into every now and then.

If it didn't happen now, it would have happened in the summer. But that $10 million is still on the budget to be spent in 2009, it's not like the payroll is going down by the amount of B.J.'s salary (I know, it's possible it could go down, but I'm not banking on that.)

Bottom line: Ryan was finished.
