On Top Of The World

The City of Brotherly Love has finally exorcised the demons. The Phillies are World Series champions.

Look at Brad Lidge's face.

For one priceless moment, when that final out is made, grown men become boys once again. That, my friends, is why I'm a sports fan.

Enjoy yourselves, Philadelphians. You waited 28 years. And who knows when you will reach the summit again.

In that photo I think Lidge was exorcising his demons from Game 5 of the 2005 NLCS.

wasnt it sort of a sweet victory to see hinske strike out to end the game?

@ Ian: Absolutely. Lidge was fucking nails this season. What a year. Good for him. Good for him that he was able to come back. He exorcised his own demons last night.

@ Kushnir: First time caller! Welcome, make yourself at home. And, dude, Hinske waiving on strike three was the icing on the cake. It was lovely.

And lest we forget, with the Phillies winning, that means the Rays (or Red Sox, or Yankees...) did not.

I just realized the eerie parallels between the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays, and the 2006 Detroit Tigers. Both teams overcame several consecutive losing seasons to make it to the playoffs, both teams lost 3-1 in the World Series. Weird.

That Tampa-Detroit parallel is a good one. Wonder if the Rays fall flat like the Tigers in the years since. Hard to see, given the state of their pitching staff.

And Mr. Sportsandthecity, I'm a little shocked you didn't slag Hinske upfront in the column. Good restraint, that.

@ JT: The Rays winning honestly wouldn't have bothered me that much. Had they won, it wouldn't have been a championship they picked up on the free agent market. But I'm with you, fuck everyone else in the AL East!

@ Ian: That is an interesting comparison. I still can't believe Detroit was so bad in 2008. But like everyone is saying, there's no way Tampa falls back next year. They'll probably improve.

@ Escaped: I was impressed by my restraint re: Hinske as well. Lidge's reaction sealed the deal for me. Hinske was an afterthought, doing what he always does in the playoffs: striking out. So I thought I'd give Lidge and Stairsy the honour, and let Hinske fade quietly into the night where he belongs.

replica watch can then enjoy years of good service from your swiss watch and be able to see it increase in value as the years go by. It will also make a good fake watch if you are buying one for your loved one.
